Music

Music has always been a strong focus at St Mary's and classroom courses are available through all levels of the curriculum, being compulsory at Year 9 and optional thereafter.

Individual Music Lessons are available by external private tutors during school time for students. These include Piano, Theory, Drums, Voice, Strings, Woodwind, Keyboard, Brass, Pipe Organ, and Classical Guitar.

Other school music activities include: Taranaki Secondary Schools Music Festival, House Music, St Mary's School Music Competitions, outside examinations such as Royal Schools and Trinity College, Rotary Music Competition, Local festivals of performing arts, choral evening worship at St Mary's Taranaki Cathedral, school choir, school instrumental ensemble, choir tours, visits to concerts such as the Taranaki Arts Festival and Chamber Music NZ tours.

All students participate in the House Music competition which is a highlight of the year and always plays to an overflowing theatre.

Instruments - it is desirable that all students have their own instruments, especially after the first year of tuition.  However the school does have a small number of instruments available for hire. Information regarding instruments and any other enquiries should be directed to the Head of the Music.

Students have the opportunity to take part in one or both of our choirs.

The school choir is a large group of students who enjoy participation in choral music. Girls are elibible to join the choir from year 9. All girls are auditioned and are expected to be 100% committed to rehearsals and performances.

Cantores is the elite choir of the school. It is small in number from the school choir who are extended in this activity.

Both choirs regularly perform in competitions within Taranaki and nationally.
